Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My laptop sounds very tinny when I plug in my headphones. The headphones sound great elsewhere and the bluetooth headphones sound great on my laptop. This happened before when my computer updated a while ago and it has happened again after an update recently. The problem is that I did a lot of updates in the last couple weeks and I don't know which it is, but either way, I need these updates. I can't just avoid updates until the end of time. How can I fix this while still using updates?

I updated everything and looked at other questions and they said to do stuff with Realtek HD Audio but my computer will only let me use that. It just says it is the best driver and none other exist on my computer when I search.

Thank you!

Hi @HotDan95

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you with the audio issue.

Let's try these steps to run the Audio Troubleshooter -

1) In Windows, type "Find and fix audio" into Search, or right-click the speaker icon on the taskbar and select Troubleshoot sound problems.
2) Select Find and fix audio playback problems or Find and fix audio recording problems from the Search results.

Re-installing the audio driver -

1) In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
2) Double-click Sound, video and game controllers.
3) Right click on the Audio drivers and click on uninstall.
4) Restart the computer.

Try updating the computer using these steps -

Step 1 Windows Updates troubleshooter -

Click on this link to run Windows Updates troubleshooter.

Step 2 Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.

2) Check for updates.

3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Step 3 HP Support Assistant Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open HP Support Assistant.

2) Check for updates.

3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I'm currently addressing the same issue. After all the different uninstall and reinstall, only the following works for me now.

Unfortunately, the version of the audio driver 6.0.8716.1 Rev.C is still causing me problems (and of course the subsequent windows 10 updates). So I switched back to driver version 6.0.1.8454. Here is the fully functional HP Audio Switch (where you can open the settings of this utility and turn off the headphone extension on the Output tab). Sometimes I have to restart ntb. I think this is related to a known bug in Windows 10 1903. As you can read 4 example here.

You may be able to do this without reinstalling. I would try to open Device Manager - Audio, Video and Game Controllers - rclick on Realtek Audio - on the Driver tab, select Revert Driver Changes.

I hope it will help you.

Yeah, I also have the 6.0.8716.1 driver but it won't allow me to revert back. Where is the audio switcher you mentioned?

To the HP employee:

I tried all of those steps. My driver is up to date, it is just a crappy one. I've run diagnostics and it believes that everything is just fine.

Sorry 4 my late response. You have to try launching the HP Audio Switch app  from the Start menu and then the following should appear above the system tray. (don´t be shocked, the system language is Czech 😉

If not, I would bet that the driver update (or windows update) is responsible for your problem. If the given menu is displayed, then it is necessary to press the  button for setup setting and in the next step turn off the following on the output tab.

turn_off_this.png

What I have found so far seems to me that the update always set this value for the headphones to state on = no bass. And unfortunately without the possibility to run the given settings where it can be turned off.

Another strange thing is, that after downgrade of the audio driver (to driver version 6.0.1.8454 - for me the best one) immediately when I can run this HP Audio Switch app (and before first restart), it´s not showing bang&olufsen logo, but logo of DTS® instead (but I think that this is caused of update of HP Audio Switch app to version 1.0.179.0 Rev.A). So it looks like all this issues are truly related to already known bug in windows with DTS and especially with Realtek Audio chip which I mentioned in my previous post.

So try to install driver version 6.0.1.8454 and HP Audio Switch app version 1.0.150.0 and I think that everything will be ok.

Another way is to uninstall actual version of hp audio switch, uninstall actually using Realtek driver, install Realtek driver 6.0.1.8454 and install old version of HP Audio Switch app from your SWSetup folder on system drive (in my case \SWSetup\APP\Applications\HP\HPAudioSw_PPL3B2\ - it´s a version 1.0.150.0). If you need any of mentioned files, don´t hesitate to send me PM.

Good luck

I found the audio switch but it doesn't have a settings option. How do I install the older versions of the app and driver? Is there an official HP link or something I can go to? I appreciate your offer to send the files but I'm not too comfortable with that. Thanks!

And which version of HP Audio Switch are u using now? I don´t know with which version you bought your laptop. But usually all of installed HP soft is saved in the SWSetup folder on system drive. If you have already updated this application I think that you can try to start HP Recovery Manager and select Reinstall drivers and/or application and choose what you need. But in a fact I have the option for setting in all versions of HP Audio Switch, so this is new to me.

Maybe you can try something from the following links:
