Envy 17t
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a HP ENVY Laptopk - 17t-n100 CTO.
Product #: [serial number removed]

Running Windows 10 Pro (64 bit)

I'm getting static in the following situations:
1 When powering up - for a few seconds then stops on its own.
2 Just after clicking on play on any music/audio file - sometimes it stops on it's own after a few seconds, sometimes it doesn't stop.
3 Just before music or video plays when browsing the internet.

The problem goes away when I unplug the power cord.

I have downloaded  all the latest drivers ... I've set my setttings every which way ... I've even disabled my microphone ... I've upgraded to the newest version of Windows 10  - all doesn't work!

* This problem exists even WITHOUT a sound driver.  i.e. When I run the sound diagnostic and it automatically uninstalls the driver, and ask for restart - upon restart, there's STILL static!
** Also, sometimes the power plug doesn't charge when I disconnect and reconnect ... like it would be charging, I pull the plug then plug it back in and it won't charge ... the timing of this problem preceeds the static problem ...

Appreciate any new feedback from anyone who can help!!

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

I see that you're experiencing  Electro-Static Discharge with the HP laptop,

The AC adapter, which is the source of electrical power for the notebook, is designed to be used with a three-wire power cord. The AC adapter is, however, extensively tested to international safety standards with a 2-wire cord.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Have you tried with Alternate Ac adapter?

Note: If you think there is a likelihood of hazardous shock with your HP notebook computer, immediately disconnect the notebook's AC adapter from the power socket and discontinue use of it.

Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi, thanks for your suggestion.

Yes, this is the alternate AC adapter that I'm using.  I changed it because the original one I had seemingly had an issue.  But this did not resolve the static problem.

I am having the exact same problem.  It goes away if I pull the power supply but then comes back once I plug it back in.  I have done everything sugested such as replace the sound driver, I am using a three prong plug, and have gone as far as pulling the batter to see if that was the problem but no success.  I have not yet replaced the power supply and am wondering if thats the next step.  Any suggestions would be great.

At the advise of the HP support, I took my laptop to the nearby HP service center.  After checking, they discovered that this is a problem with the motherboard.   To resolve this, you just gotta replace it.

For me, this is a 3 year old laptop bought at about $1200.  Replacing the mother board would run approx. $500.  Nowadyas, the price of laptops that fit my needs are about $1000 or so.  After further consideration and recommnedation from the service center - it's decided that the best option is just to live with it until I get another one to replace this.

Hope this helps you make a decision about next steps.
