Line-in microphone (3.5 mm jack) gives poor quality voice recording with very low volume [ maximum 4%] and disturbance. Consequently I cannot use it for dictation. Mic is Emkay headset (mono) approved for Dragon voice recognition software. Laptop's built-in microphone functions well.
In the Realtek High Definition audio driver properties, the following message is given in the events log :
Device HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0295&SUBSYS_103C8216&REV_1000\4&34719e6e&0&0001 requires further installation.
The audio driver details are as under:
driver provider: Realtek Semiconductor
driver date : 20.12.16
driver ver: 6.0.1.8023

HP does not supply newer drivers for the series of your machine.

Please perform a clean install Audio software/driver, this should help.
(a) Download the following driver and save on your computer,
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp80501-81000/sp80538.exe
(b) Go to Device Manager, Sound to uninstall sound driver (Realtek) and reboot,
(c) Right click downloaded file and select Run as administrator,
(d) Reboot again.
