HP Envy 17 Notebook PC

Microphone - 3 1/2 year old laptop is out of warranty. I had HP do an on-line diagnostics check (it cost $69). They confirmed that the non-working mic was not a software problem (it used to work until a couple of months ago). So I bought an external mic and now it is fine. I would rather fix it on the laptop if it is not too expensive (motherboard?). How can I do that inexpensively? FYI part of the diagnostics check was wiping the computer clean and taking ti back to factory initial condition. After that I downloaded Windows 10 again.

Speakers - sound was fine up until a couple of months ago. Now, even at max volume, it is very low. Not sure if it is a Windows 10 problem? I googled the low volume issue and found an answer for a downlaod that was supposed to fix it. I clicked on the link "http://goo.gl/6Rqf7p" but it takes me to a SOFTPEDIA site. I googled them and read a lot of negative comments about getting viruses so I dropped that idea. Then I tried the hotline and followed the instructions to click on the speaker icon and go to speaker qualities then enhancemens and turn on the loudness equalization. I did so and it might have helped a bit but not much. Any way to get it back to original volume?

Thanks DanielD1

Hi, Daniel:

If your notebook has the IDT HD audio, the only suggestion I can offer would be to reinstall the W10 IDT audio driver and restart the PC.

This package contains the driver that enables the IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system.

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp63501-64000/sp63555.exe

As far as repairing the internal microphone is concerned, I am not a PC repair tech by trade or training, but normally that would require replacing the entire motherboard.

That would be a pretty expensive and labor intensive project.

But if the microphone and sound went out at about the same time, maybe reinstalling the W10 audio driver will fix both of those problems.

Paul, Thanks you so much for the solution to the speakers problem. They now sound just like new after installing the driver you recommended. Nothing to be done about the mic. I think it is the motherboard but am not going to the expense of having it replaced. The external mic filled the bill. Grazie Mille
