I'm having issues with my internal microphone.  Last year sometime I had to record a class project using Zoom and started experiencing the issue then.  My microphone will record but when playing back the audio the sound is so faint I can turn up the volume to 100 and still barely hear it.  Somehow it started working again and I was able to get my project done and I never needed it since.  Fast forward a year and I'm trying to record a training video and same issue.  I  went into settings and turned the Array up to 100 and the DB up to +20.  Now I can hear it slightly better I have to put my head up to the speaker still to hear.  If I use a headset I can record fine but in playback mode I can only hear out of the left earpiece of the headphone.  If I remove the headset I can hear everything I recorded perfectly fine.

I have spent a day going through every tutorial I can find from adjusting the sound settings through control panel, updating the driver, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, using the troubleshoot sound options.  I'm at a loss and have not clue what the issue could be.  Nothing has worked.  The driver is a Realtek High Definition Audio (SST).

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to HP support community.

The Troubleshooting tool automatically finds and fixes many computer issues. Use it to troubleshoot microphone problems.

  1. In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.

  2. Click Troubleshooting.

  3. Under Hardware and Sound, click Troubleshoot audio recording.

    NOTE:

Administrator permission is required to run this program. If prompted, type the administrator password or provide confirmation.

  4. The Sound troubleshooter opens. Click Next. The troubleshooter begins checking the audio service status.

  5. Select the device you want to troubleshoot, and then click Next.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions and make any changes suggested by the troubleshooter. When done, close the troubleshooter.

  7. If the problem persists, continue to the next step.

We may need to reset the privacy settings for the Microphone if the issue occurred after any recent windows updates:

  1. Open Settings from your start menu.
  2. Click on Privacy in order to access all your privacy settings.
  3. Select Microphone from the left pane and then click the Change button.
  4. Now, turn on the microphone for this device.
  5. Turn on Allow apps to access your microphone.
  6. Finally, in the app list, make sure to turn on microphone access for every app you want to give permission to access your microphone.
  7. Repeat the same exact steps but for your webcam this time.

If the issue persists, uninstall the microphone driver and restart to automatically install a fresh driver for the same.

  1. Open device manager, the fastest way is through the search bar:
  2. Open ‘Audio Inputs and Outputs’
  3. Left-click on your recording device.
  4. In the menu that opens up Click ‘Uninstall’.
  5. delete the driver. click apply/OK and then, restart the pc.

I hope that helps.

Sandy,

I went through all these steps and still have the issues with recording audio.

The computer will record it but I still can't her myself speak but when I bang on the desk  or scream the microphone picks up a small sound and when played back at max volume it sounds like a whisper.

1. When using Troubleshooting Windows does not detect any error.

2. All programs have access to the microphone.

3. I uninstalled the driver and restarted and tried to record and still the same issue.

Thank you for posting back.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. I would suggest performing system factory reset will put the computer back to the original factory settings in this way all corrupted and outdated software will be removed.

While doing the recovery there is an option to backup your personal files. If you have not previously done one now is a good time.

Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows )You can also contact HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties: www.hp.com/contacthp/

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
