Mute light on F6 key not working after Windows Update- HP Pavilion Notebook, Windows 10 Home

Product Name: HP Pavilion Notebook
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Problem: Mute button (F6) light on laptop keyboard is no longer working after a very lengthy/large Windows Update on 6/9-6/10. Volume buttons work, but light does not turn on when computer is muted.

What I Have Tried:  I have already tried the "update driver" option suggested in other similar threads (for Realtek High Definition Audio device), have rebooted.  No change in behavior noted.

Computer info:

Product number:N5Y64UAR#ABA
BIOS:F.17-03/10/2016
Keyboard revision:82.29

Items Listed under "Sound, video and game controllers":

Thank you for your help with this.

Regards,

Jim

Re: Mute light on F6 key not working after Windows Update- HP Pavilion Notebook, Windows 10 Home

Hi,

Try the following.

Download the Realtek HD Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp77501-78000/sp77770.exe

When done, hold down the Windows key and press R

Into the Run window, type devmgmt.msc and hit enter.

In Device Manager, expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the Realtek device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.

When complete, restart the notebook.

When windows has reloaded, open your Downloads folder, right click on the Realtek installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, restart the notebook and let windows fully load for a few minutes before checking the function of the mute led.

Re: Mute light on F6 key not working after Windows Update- HP Pavilion Notebook, Windows 10 Home

Hi David,

Thank you for your help.

I uninstalled the device, then restarted my notebook.

Curiously, the mute button light began working again, even before I got to the next step in your instructions.

Since I was not expecting it to already be working at this early  point in your instructions, I looked in Device Manager.

  • The Realtek device was there, and
  • there were events logged for it, showing that the drover had been deleted,
  • but also events showing a subsequent (automatic?) driver install  (nothing that I intentionally did, looks like some sort of default system behavior.)

Everything seems normal at this point. Given that, is there any compelling reason you can think of to continue with running the Realtek installer per your instructions?

Thanks,

Jim

Re: Mute light on F6 key not working after Windows Update- HP Pavilion Notebook, Windows 10 Home

Hi Jim,

You're welcome

If it's working Ok then I don't see any reason to run the Realtek installer you downloaded - it looks like Windows automatically downloaded and installed a version that works.

All the best,

DP-K
