My laptop beeps every 60 seconds but I can't figure out why? Any ideas? Thanks

@daveh15129,

A repeating beep every 60 seconds is definitely not a normal Windows alert -it usually points to either hardware monitoring, BIOS/firmware, or battery/thermal protection behavior. Here are a few checks you can try to narrow it down:

  1. Confirm where the sound originates

    • From the speakers: It may be a Windows system or accessibility notification (for example, a "low battery" or "Filter Keys" beep).

    • From inside the chassis (not the speakers): Then it's a hardware beep from your motherboard's system speaker -typically signaling a hardware or thermal event.

  2. Check for Windows-side causes

    • Open Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → ensure Sticky Keys and Filter Keys are off (these can produce periodic beeps).

    • Check Notifications & Actions to see if any background app (such as HP Support Assistant or Battery Health Manager) triggers alerts.

    • In the system tray, make sure there's no HP Support Assistant warning or BIOS update reminder.

  3. Power and battery health

    • If the laptop runs on battery, connect the AC adapter and see if the beeping stops.

    • If the battery is near end-of-life or not properly seated, the BIOS can emit a periodic warning tone -this is perhaps one of the most common reasons.

    • You can verify battery condition via HP Hardware Diagnostics → Component Tests → Battery Test.

  4. Thermal or fan issue

    • A failing or obstructed cooling fan can trigger a once-per-minute hardware alert (the BIOS may briefly throttle and beep).

    • Ensure the vents are clear and the fan spins freely.

    • You can test the fan in HP Hardware Diagnostics as well.

    • Refresh the thermal paste between the CPU's integrated heat spreader (IHS) and the heatsink assembly, if you're up to it.
  5. Perform a UEFI Hardware Diagnostics test

    • Power on the laptop and immediately press Esc, then F2.

    • Run the "System Test" or "Component Test". If a fan, battery, or temperature fault is detected, it will appear there.

  6. Reset BIOS defaults

    • Restart → tap F10 to enter BIOS → press F9 (Load Defaults) → F10 (Save and Exit).

    • This clears any false thermal or battery sensor triggers.

If the beeping continues even after these steps and it's coming from the chassis, please note the exact beep pattern (for example: 1 short beep every 60 seconds, or a series of beeps). You can post that -HP diagnostic codes follow specific patterns that can identify the component involved.

Kind Regards,
