Hi:

See if this audio driver works for you...

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp40001-40500/sp40438.exe

HP Recommended

Tried old version 36420 and new 40438. It doesn't go with Vista 32bit, nor with Seven 32bit.

What is the hardware ID for the multimedia audio controller?

Use this guide for how to find that info...

OK, that should be the driver you need, so see if this works...

Go to the device manager.

Click on the Multimedia audio controller needing the driver.

Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update Driver.

Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and then at the bottom of that window, select the Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.

Click on Have Disk and browse to C:\SWSetup\sp40438\WDM\Vista\STWRT (setup information file), click Next, and hopefully the driver will install.

Then restart the PC.

Here is a partial copy and paste of the STWRT setup information file which shows driver support for the hardware ID you posted...

I followed as written, but it doesn't work.

Sorry that didn't work either.

I don't know why it won't since the hardware ID is supported by the driver.

Unfortunately, I don't have any other suggestions for you to try other than the automatic windows update method if you have not tried that already.

To do that, be connected to the internet...go to the device manager.

Click on the multimedia audio controller needing the driver.

Click on the Driver tab.  Click on Update Driver.

Select the automatic update method and wait until either windows finds, downloads and installs a driver, or reports that the best driver is already installed, or windows could not find a driver for the device.

I have already done Windows update only for audio drives, nothing from the headphones and speaker, the sound bar is seen to be up and down but no sound.
I've seen on the net that many people have this audio problem when they lose the original operating system. I had to install all old drives and not updated to date. I had a problem even with NVIDIA video card I put updated drives and the screen goes black after starting with Vista and with SEVEN.
