HP ENVY Laptop 17-bw0xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The microphone of my laptop is scratchy on windows OS. Everything that is recorded sounds like a robot. This is both the case with and without speakers. My laptop is dual-booted and on Ubuntu the microphone works fine, so it is not a hardware issue. I have tried updating the audio drivers, I have tried deleting and reinstalling them. I have tried the trouble shooting function. I have tried disabling the noise cancelling. Nothing seems to have fixed it.

Two weeks ago the problem was not there yet, so it is related to a recent windows update. If I try to download an audio driver via https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-envy-17-bw0000-laptop-pc-series/20283127/model/2... , it only gives me options for windows  10 v1709 and v1809 but not v1909.

What else can I do to fix this?

Welcome to HP Community

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

Select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

You can also refer to these Links from HP and Zoom https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03421813

Keep me posted how it goes

Thank you and have a wonderful day 😊

Hi @KrazyToad, thank you for your reply

Unfortunately I have already tried downloading the latest drivers via the support assistant. This did not resolve the problem. Everything is up to date, except a BIOS update which I am postponing because I do not have a hard drive for a back-up. I do not think this BIOS update would affect the microphone, since it does work on my Ubuntu

Greetings

I suggest you run an SFC scan and check if that helps

If the issue persists try creating a New User Account. Link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/4026923/windows-10-create-a-local-user-or-administrator-acc...

@KrazyToad,

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately the issue still persists after trying these two solutions

I understand your concerns.

Here is a link to HP PCs - Resolving microphone problems (Windows 10,  that should help.

If the issue remains you could try doing a restore back to before this occurred.

HP PCs - Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 10).

If a restore is not possible I would do an HP PCs - Refresh Your PC to Resolve Problems (Windows 8. This will reinstall the operating system but should not affect your personal files.

Have a nice day!!
