HP ENVY m7 Notebook - M1W11UA#ABA
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This static started weeks ago, after a Windows update.

1. During the POST, static can be heard on the notebook speakers for a few seconds.

2. When audio is played on the notebook speakers, static can be heard continuously.  When the audio is muted, static can still be heard on the notebook speakers.

3. When audio is played through the headphone jack, no static is heard in the headphones, but static can be heard on the notebook speakers. Muting the audio does not mute the static.

4. When audio is played through USB headphones, no static is heard in the headphones and no static is heard through the notebook speakers.

I have tried unchecking the FAST START BOX, but there was no change in the static.

This is not happening with different brand notebook computers I have.  It appears to be related to HP drivers only.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Welcome to HP support community.

Install an updated audio driver

  1. Confirm that the computer is connected to the internet.

  2. Click Start, type device into the search field, and then select Device Manager from the list.

  3. Grant permission to continue, if prompted.

  4. Click the + (plus) sign next to Sound, video and game controllers in the Device Manager window.

Figure : Sound Device in Device Manager

Image of Sound Device in Device Manager
  5. Right-click the name of the audio device listed under Sound, video and game controllers, and then click Update Driver Software.

  6. Click Search automatically for updated driver software, when prompted.

  7. Windows checks for and installs any updated drivers. Restart the computer for the settings to take effect.

Check for Windows updates

  1. In Windows, search for and open Windows Update settings.

  2. Click Check for updates.

If there are any available updates, they begin installing automatically.

  3. After the updates install, restart your computer, if necessary.

Hello Sandytechy20,

I did everything listed. No change yet.

Then I disabled all the other drivers and did everything listed again. No change.

During the third attempt I disabled all the drivers and left them disabled after a restart.

Upon restart, the static started during the POST and never stopped.

Any attempt to play audio was silent due to all the drivers being disabled.

However, the static remained constant as long as the computer was on.

This sounds like the HP computer is applying a voltage across the speaker terminals without any drivers active.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
