HP Spectre
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Two issue, one when booting HP Spectre,  the the Startup screen always appears and you have to press Enter to boot into windows.

Second, the Sound comes up muted.  If you try to increase the volume it just slides back to 0 and the mute light comes on.  You cannot turn off via, screen or keyboard button.

We have run the extensive diagnostics and everything passed.

Ran audio component test and sound plays through speaker and headphones, and we are able to increase/decrease volume.

We have uninstalled the Conextant drivers. deleted files and reinstalled automatically, no luck.

tried holding in power button for a hard reset, no luck

Is this a hardware or software issue with HP?

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand the volume decreases to mute automatically,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824

(Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).

Did you check if the Fn or volume reduction button is stuck?

If none of the buttons are stuck and yet the issue persists, here’s a few things you could attempt:

By default, Windows automatically enables microphones and line-in ports. Use the following steps to set the microphone/line-in port to be the default port and to configure the recording levels:

  1. If the Recording tab in the sound window is not selected, open the Sound window and click the Recording tab using the instructions in Step 1.

 NOTE:

Your desktop or notebook PC configuration may include different components then shown here.

  1. Microphone port -   If, working and set as Default

  2. Line In - Working

  3. Digital In (S/PDIF port) - Working

  4. Stereo Mix (Software mixer) -   If it's, Disabled :-

  5. If multiple microphones or line-in ports are available, select the port that you want to use. Click Set Default to make this device the default audio input device.

  6. If the device you want to use contains a small circle with an arrow pointing down, the device is disabled. To enable the device, right-click the device name and select Enable.

  7. With the device selected, click Properties, and then click the Levels tab.

  8. Adjust the slider to 75.

  9. If Mute is on, click the mute button to un-mate the device. The mute button should show as a blue speaker without a red circle.

  10. If Microphone Boost is available, adjust to +20.0 dB.

  11. Click OK to make the changes.

  12. Test the microphone using the instructions in Step 1 to determine if Windows is able to detect a signal for the microphone or line-in being used. If you have performed all the steps and the microphone or source device still does not work, the audio ports or sound hardware on the computer might be bad.
