When I press play on a video, or make any attempt to play audio in general, the laptop produces an extremely loud/obnoxious noise, and the actual video sound is faintly audible in the background. I think of the noise as a blend between white noise, and the hissing of hydraulics. It is loud, persistent, and stops whenever I shut off the source of audio.
The sound shows up regardless of headphones or loudspeakers. However with headphones, the video sound plays normally through the left ear, and the noise blares through the right. So it’s tolerable if I only use the left earbud and smother the right one underneath a pillow.
