Pavilion
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Brand new laptop with solid state drive and windows 10.  Plug in my head phones and only the left ear has sound.  Very weak sound.  The behavior is as though a different type of plug is expected, or maybe the connector on the headphones does not extend far enough into computer to make a proper connection.

Is there anything I can do?

I am using MS Edge and do not see any tools to edit my first post.

From my box of cables and stuff I dug out an extension cable.  The male end of that is the same length as my head phones.  But I tried it anyway with the same result.

Then I found an adapter from the 1/8 inch jack on my computer to older 1/4 inch and another adapter from 1/4 back to 1/8.  Plugged them together and they do not fix the problem.  All the male connectors are the same length.  They all snap into place.

And yes, the volume is turned up to 100 %.
