hp stream won't drive powered speakers

HP Stream 13-c010nr
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Possible hardware/firmware design problem.  Two identical laptops purchased 2 years apart.  Both work great with headphones or built in speakers.  Neither will work with powered speakers.  Tried 3 different powered speaker systems, including a high end model.  All had the same problem on both laptops.  Drops one channel and/or goes mono.  Sound quality is POOR.  Realtek only shows one output device HP/Speakers.  Config options don't show any option for external speakers.  Since headphones work fine, assuming it is having problems when it senses a powered speaker system.

Has anyone else seen this?

hp stream won't drive powered speakers

Both laptops came with Realtek 6.0.1.7339.  The articles on getting sound to work on an HP laptop really don't address this issue.  They handle generic issues where sound has been disabled or simply does not work at all.  This is not the case here.

Has ANYONE ever plugged powered speakers into an HP Stream and had them work properly?????

One unit is 2 years out of warranty.  The other is a few months out of warranty.  Do you have specifics on what speakers were tested with this laptop model?  It would help me to know the manifacturer and model.
