I don't know what it means to "clean install" the driver.  I have tried all the other solutions and nothing worked.

Meanwhile, to resolve the Microphone / Static noise issue, please follow the below steps:

  1. Uninstall the Realtek Audio driver version 6.0.1.8393 from the device manager (Windows + X, select it) once done, restart the device and then test with MS Native driver.
  2. Restart to check if Microphone continues to work well with no issue using MS driver.
  3. Reinstall Realtek audio 6.0.1.8393 from the HP website,
  4. And check if it works.

I uninstalled device and driver, now neither microphone nor speakers work.  How do I get the "MS Native Driver?"  I have no idea what that even means.  Thanks!

HP Recommended

@SisterCarol The MS Native driver is nothing but the generic driver that gets installed automatically when you uninstall the existing audio drivers from the device manager and then restart the PC, check if that works, if it does, update the driver from the HP website and everything should be okay, keep us posted and let us know if you've got any other questions.

I finally found the answer myself (after HP "experts" recommended a complete reinstall of the operating system, LOL):  I went back to the 2018 version of the Realtek driver and now the microphone works fine.

@SisterCarol We usually leave the re-installation of the OS as the last hope/option, however, if you've done that and its working fine, I'm glad you did it, I hope you had backed up all your personal data before you did it though, that said, if you need anything else, feel free to get back to us any time,

And If you wish to thank me for my efforts, you could click on "Accept as solution" on my post as the solution should help others too.

YOU MISUNDERSTOOD.  The HP guy told me to reinstall the operating system but I did not want to do it.  I solved the problem by simply rolling back to the 2018 version of the Realtek driver.... that was all it took.
