Hi @joomi

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the issue—I'm really sorry your laptop microphone suddenly stopped working. That kind of disruption can be especially frustrating when you rely on it daily.

Let’s walk through a focused recovery path to help restore your mic.

Step-by-Step Fix for Laptop Microphone Not Working on Windows

1. Check Microphone Privacy Settings

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone
  • Make sure Microphone access is turned on
  • Ensure Let apps access your microphone is also enabled

If this is off, apps won’t detect or use your mic—even if it’s working.

2. Verify Input Device

  • Go to Settings > System > Sound
  • Under Input, confirm the correct microphone is selected (e.g., “Internal Microphone” or “Realtek Microphone”)
  • Tap or speak into the mic and check the input level meter

If the meter doesn’t move, the mic may be disabled or misconfigured.

3. Run the Windows Troubleshooter

  • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters
  • Run the Recording Audio troubleshooter

This scans for common issues and applies automatic fixes.

4. Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers

  • Press Windows + X, select Device Manager
  • Expand Audio inputs and outputs
  • Right-click your microphone > Uninstall device
  • Restart your laptop—Windows will reinstall the driver automatically

This clears any corrupted driver files that may block mic input.

5. Check Sound Control Panel

  • Press Windows + R, type mmsys.cpl, and press Enter
  • Go to the Recording tab
  • Right-click your microphone > Enable (if disabled)
  • Set it as Default Device
  • Click Properties > Levels and ensure the volume is above 80%

This ensures your mic is active and not muted.

6. Test in Voice Recorder

  • Open the Voice Recorder app from the Start menu
  • Record a short clip and play it back

If it records clearly, your mic is working and the issue may be app-specific.

Let me know what happens after checking the privacy settings and sound control panel—I’ll guide you further based on that.

You’re doing everything right by catching this early and staying proactive.
