purchased 14m-dw0023dx laptop little over a year ago. Warranty expired. Just tried using headphone jack for the first time, and there's no sound.

Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!

 

I see you are experiencing issues with the HP Notebook headphone jack is not working correctly.  

 

I have a few recommendations 

  • Update your Notebook computer to latest BIOS from HP.COM.
  • Check with any alternate headphones if it works fine. 
  • Make sure the Windows and HP support assistant updates are up to date. 
  • Check if sound works fine from speakers
