using brand new pavilion 15-cs1605, windows 10 home 64 bit. Stereo mix not showing up in sound/recording even as disabled or disconnected. Have been beating my head against a brick wall trying to find out if the sound card provided in this computer even supports stereo mix.

@angelab3
Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.
I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:
To enable Stereo Mix. Go down to the audio icon in your system tray, right-click it, and go to “Recording Devices” to open up the proper settings pane. In the pane, right-click on a blank area, and make sure both “View Disabled Devices” and “View Disconnected Devices” options are checked.
I suggest you to view this video for steps to add stereo mix: http://hp.care/2ifCz6h.

If the stereo mix option isn't available then I suggest you to uninstall the audio drivers and reinstall them from this link: www.hp.com/drivers
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
