Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

when the laptop is connected to docking station (HP ultraslim docking station) and the earphones are connected to 3.5mm left panel jack of the laptop itself, microphone does not work.

Instead everything works fine if the laptop is NOT connected to docking station.

From the following iformation

   https://support.hp.com/id-en/document/c04936028

Machines has Headphone/Microphone combo port. When you connect headphone to the machine itself (same port with microphone) machine thinks you use BOTH connections therefore it disables the microphone port.

Please try

(a) Right click speaker icon (bottom right),

(b) Select Recording devices

(c) Disable what aver external microphone and enable  Internal microphone

Regards.
