Hi @Dietmar11,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue you're describing suggests a problem with either the battery, the power adapter, or the laptop's charging circuit. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and narrow down the cause.
Check the Power Adapter
- Since your adapter is outputting 19.69 volts (which is within the expected range), the adapter itself may not be the issue. However, ensure the connector tip is clean and fits snugly into the laptop's charging port.
- If possible, test the laptop with another compatible HP power adapter to rule out intermittent issues with your current one.
Inspect the Charging Port
- Inspect for damage: Look for bent or corroded pins inside the laptop's charging port.
- Clean the port: Use a dry brush or compressed air to clean out debris.
Battery Test
- Battery removed:
- When you remove the battery, the laptop should run solely on AC power. If it shuts down after 2 seconds:
- It could indicate a faulty charging circuit or motherboard issue.
- Alternatively, the power adapter may not be delivering enough current under load, despite the correct voltage reading.
- When you remove the battery, the laptop should run solely on AC power. If it shuts down after 2 seconds:
- Battery installed:
- If the battery charges intermittently and you get warnings to plug in the adapter, the battery may be failing. Check the battery's health using the following:
- HP Hardware Diagnostics Tool: Restart your laptop and press F2 during boot to access diagnostics. Run the battery test.
- Windows Battery Report: Run the powercfg /batteryreport command in Command Prompt to analyze battery performance.
- If the battery charges intermittently and you get warnings to plug in the adapter, the battery may be failing. Check the battery's health using the following:
LED Indicator Codes
- Amber light with long pause: Indicates the battery is charging, but the pauses could signal inconsistent charging or a communication error between the battery and motherboard.
- White light without battery: Shows the power adapter is supplying power, but the laptop may not fully utilize it due to hardware issues.
BIOS Update
- If the laptop is functional long enough, check for any available BIOS updates. Charging issues can sometimes be resolved with firmware updates. Visit the HP Support site and enter your laptop model to check for updates.

Perform a Hard Reset
- Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery.
- Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to discharge residual power.
- Reconnect the adapter (without the battery) and attempt to power on.
Replace the Battery or Power Adapter
- If diagnostics indicate the battery is failing, replace it with an HP-certified replacement.
- If the power adapter struggles to power the laptop without the battery, it may need to be replaced despite the correct voltage reading.
Charging Circuit or Motherboard Issue
- If none of the above resolves the issue, the problem may lie with:
- Charging circuit on the motherboard.
- Power jack (internal connector) or its soldering.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
