HP Notebook – 17-bs523ng

Hello

I have problems with an HP notebook. I have done some updates using the HP tool in the Firefox browser, such as a firmware update. Now I have the problem that the device won't start and only shows a blinking code of 3x light and 5x short.

And now nothing works at all? What can I do? Does anyone have any tips for me?

Kind regards

Hi @Wieczo,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're encountering a BIOS/firmware issue after updating your HP 17-bs523ng notebook, and the blinking 3x light and 5x short code is indicating a hardware problem. The 3-5 blink code is a BIOS recovery error on HP laptops, specifically pointing to an issue with the BIOS or firmware update process.

Here are some steps you can take to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset

Before jumping to complex solutions, start with a simple hard reset, as it can clear out temporary issues.

  1. Power off the laptop completely.
  2. Unplug the power cord and remove the battery (if removable).Press and hold the power button for about 15-30 seconds to drain any residual power from the laptop.
  3. Reconnect the battery and power cable.Press the power button again to turn the laptop on.

This can sometimes resolve booting issues caused by the firmware update.

Step 2: Try to Perform a BIOS Recovery

Since the blink code indicates a BIOS failure, you can try a BIOS recovery to restore the BIOS firmware to a working state.

Prepare a USB drive with a BIOS recovery file:

  • Go to HP's support website.Search for your laptop model: HP 17-bs523ng.Under the Software and Drivers section, download the latest BIOS version for your laptop.
  • Follow the instructions on the HP website to copy the BIOS file to a USB flash drive. The file is usually in a compressed format (e.g., .exe), so you may need to unzip it.

Insert the USB drive into the laptop and make sure it’s powered off.

Perform a BIOS recovery:

  • Press and **hold the Windows key + B key on the laptop’s keyboard.
  • While holding the keys down, press and hold the power button for about 3 seconds, then release the power button but keep holding the Windows + B keys.
  • The laptop should begin to recover the BIOS from the USB drive. If successful, you should see the BIOS recovery screen.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the BIOS recovery process.

Step 3: Reset the BIOS (via the Key Combination)

If the laptop still doesn't boot and the recovery doesn't work, you can try resetting the BIOS using another key combination:

  1. Turn off the laptop completely.Press and hold the Windows + B keys (for about 10 seconds).
  2. While holding these keys, press the power button.
  3. After several seconds, the laptop should display a recovery screen.

Step 4: Reinstall BIOS via HP Recovery Manager

If the BIOS recovery did not work, you can use the HP Recovery Manager to reinstall or update the BIOS.

  1. Turn off the laptop.Press and hold the Esc key and turn on the laptop.Release the Esc key when the startup menu appears.
  2. Press F11 to enter the System Recovery menu.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggested solutions. Unfortunately, none of them worked. The laptop is simply dead.

It is disappointing that after a firmware update via the HP tool the device simply no longer works.

Hello,

We have the same problem. We wanted to replace the HDD with an SSD, but it wasn't recognized. We were advised to update the BIOS. The computer restarted. Since then, the LED has been flashing 3 long flashes, followed by 5 short flashes. The laptop belongs to an elderly lady. Recovery via Win+B or Win+V doesn't start. The CMOS battery was also removed for over 15 minutes.

Hi @DeltaLerch,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The 3 long, 5 short blinks on the Caps Lock LED of an HP laptop typically indicate a problem with the CPU. This suggests a potential system board or CPU failure.

Extensive Test:

1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
3. On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
4. Click Extensive Test.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
