Elitebook 8440p
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My Elitebook 8440p has spent the last 7 months in its bag and now won't power up either on battery power or connected to the mains.  No hard drive noises, clicks or anything.  All the LEDs light up every 3 seconds and then go off for another 3 seconds.and the orange power light is on (I have it plugged in).  I've done a hard reset and replaced the CMOS battery to no avail.  If I unplug it, the lights keep flashing so I figure the battery is OK. I can't find any online solution to the problem other vague hints that there is a "hardware failure".  Any ideas where to start trying to fix it?

Hi

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07107

The number and repeat pattern usually give the fault.

EG:

LED blinks once.

CPU   CPU not functional

  1. Re-seat the processor. NB:- See the Services Media Library for steps for your PC.

  2. Replace the processor. NB:- See the Services Media Library for steps for your PC.

  3. If the CPU still does not function properly, replace the Main-Board.

So any better pattern or sequence may help.

Thanks - the pattern is that all the LEDs come on, stay on for 1 second then all go off for 3 seconds - keeps doing it whether plugged in or not.  There''s no mention of this pattern on the website that I can find - I suspect a fried or displaced CPU - could be that I put the laptop i the bag while turned on but with the lid not properly closed.  I'll have a dig around inside & see what i can find.

Hi

Just a thought about the Fan, it is usually noticeable at power on.  No fan can mean an overheated CPU.

So maybe while in the bag there was no airflow if it was indeed still active.

But otherwise I am not being very helpful, so I will await an update.
