Accidently spilled water on laptop and charging button flickering

Hi,

I spilled water on the laptop. It has been almost 8 hours sine the accident happened.

I kept the laptop upside down (vertically) to get the water out and also did some drying with hair dryer through the opening below the hinges. I put on the charging but the button did not turn on. I waited for few minutes then push the power button, the power button lights flickered for few seconds and then laptop turned off itself. 

I read a post in the community saying to keep the laptop off and not put it on charging for about 24 hours. I am now waiting to see what happens after 24 hours.

Is there anything I can do meanwhile or am I missing anything ?

Spilling liquid on a laptop is the second-most damaging thing you can do to it (first is dropping it on a hard floor).

However ... it's most likely that SOME damage was done, regardless of how quickly you turned off the laptop and what you did afterward. The key problems are only the surface and almost certainly, more damage was done than that.

The ONLY way to know for sure is to take or send it to an HP Service Center and pay a LOT of money for them to run full diagnostics on it, and after that, to disassemble it to repair or replace any damaged components.

And, if the motherboard is damaged, the cost of repair can easily exceed the cost of replacing the laptop -- because (as far as I know) liquid spill damage is NOT covered under the warranty.

Hi, 

Thanks for the reply. I waited for 10 days after the accident and got the diagnosis done yesterday. The repairer says that there is corrosion on the board and the cost is $350 !!

He also says that the corrosion is widespread but I personally do not think that it is too severe to cost that much.

Any thoughts on how much should it cost or am I being fooled ?

My guess is that is probably about right.  Remember, you're not only paying RETAIL for the part, you're also paying labor to disassemble the laptop, remove the part, replace the part, reassemble the laptop.

It's not uncommon for a major replacement like this to cost as much, if not more, than simply replacing the laptop outright.
