HP Notebook - 15-bs028cy
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

After turning my laptop off for a couple of days and restarting, the screen remains black.  I can hear what I believe is the fan running and have tried removing the battery and reinserting it, but still nothing.  Any suggestions?

Hi @Wildcat69 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Notebook (or any laptop) shows a black screen upon booting, but you can hear the fan running, it indicates that the laptop is powering on, but there's an issue with the display or the boot process. Here are several steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Hard Reset:

  • Remove the Battery and AC Adapter: Disconnect the battery (if it's removable) and the AC adapter.
  • Hold the Power Button: Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect Power: Reconnect the AC adapter (leave the battery out for now) and try turning on the laptop.

Check Display:

  • External Monitor: Connect the laptop to an external monitor using an HDMI or VGA cable. If the external monitor displays correctly, the issue might be with the laptop's internal display or its connections.
  • Brightness: Ensure that the brightness is not turned all the way down. Try adjusting the brightness using the function keys (often F2 and F3 or F7 and F8).

Reseat RAM:

  • Access the RAM Slots: Power off the laptop, remove the battery and AC adapter, and open the panel where the RAM is located.
  • Remove and Reinsert RAM: Carefully remove the RAM modules and then reinsert them, ensuring they are seated properly. Reassemble the laptop and try turning it on.

BIOS/UEFI:

  • Access BIOS: Turn off the laptop, then turn it back on and immediately press the BIOS key repeatedly (usually F10, F2, Esc, or Del). If you can access the BIOS, it indicates that the issue might be with the operating system or a specific setting.
  • Reset BIOS Settings: If you can access the BIOS, try resetting it to the default settings.

Power Supply:

  • Check AC Adapter: Ensure the AC adapter is functioning correctly. Try using a different compatible AC adapter if available.
  • Battery Health: If the battery is very old or malfunctioning, it might cause boot issues. Try booting with just the AC adapter connected and the battery removed.

Inspect for Physical Damage:

  • Check for Loose Connections: Open the laptop and inspect for any loose or damaged connections, especially those related to the display cable.

Boot into Safe Mode:

  • Safe Mode: Try booting into Safe Mode. This can be done by turning on the laptop and repeatedly pressing the F8 key (or Shift+F8) during startup to access the Advanced Boot Options menu, then selecting Safe Mode.

System Restore:

  • Restore Point: If you can access Safe Mode or the Advanced Boot Options menu, try using System Restore to revert to a previous point when the laptop was functioning correctly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
