Black screen after laptop goes to sleep mode

my laptop screen goes after sleep mode ,it goes black permanently until i force shut down with power button and put on for screen to stop being black.This is hard as work unsaved may not be recovered.Want do I do? I have tried to choose what the power button does ,selected hibernate now it is totally black
