Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a recalcitrant HP laptop.  It fails to boot or do anything.  Black screen  The support micro is blinking the LED on the caps lock key with sequence: 5 long / 3 short, which according to https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01732674 is "System Board: The embedded controller times out waiting for the BIOS".

I have tried a number of things:

F6 + Power Button (which does seem to clear the CMOS settings or some such)

Windows + B, power for 2 seconds then continue with Windows+B for 40 seconds  per https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833

Same as above, but Windows + V

Trying both of the above two with a USB drive with a recovery BIOS loaded per https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833

Anyone else familiar with this syndrome?  Is it as I fear: the motherboard has an issue?

Thanks.

I have already purchased a replacement for my wife (going a month waiting for a repair would be an issue), but would still like to rescue this one.

@cube1us,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

You have done the basic troubleshooting as per the document and the notebook needs to check to get to know its hardware is faulty, not a software issue.

I'd suggest you contact HP in your region regarding the service options for your computer or HP Chat Support Team.

If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Click the “Kudos, Thumbs Up" on the bottom right to say “Thanks” for helping!

Have a great day!

Thanks - but you are wayyyyyy behind events.   The laptop has since been sent to HP in Texas for repair, and returned.

I did finally get a phone number by IM'ing HP over Facebook, of all things.  That took THREE DAYS to wade through.

It is HORRIBLE that HP seems to have put up discouraging barriers for people who JUST WANT A REPAIR QUOTE/PROCESS.  Why should support / getting quotes for repair evaporate with the warranty?  That is JUST RIDICULOUS.
