Chromebook Model 14

Chromebook will not boot, continual black screen. Have tried Power/Refresh etc but no reponse. If I remove the power lead and press the on/off button there is no response, I would expect to see the power indicator light come on. If I reconnect the power power indicator comes on (white). Then try the power on, nothing, power on/refresh nothing

Hi @Gabrelj,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A continual black screen on an HP Chromebook 14, despite attempts at rebooting with power/refresh buttons, can be a sign of several potential issues. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help you identify and potentially resolve the problem.

Check the Power Supply:

  • Ensure that the power adapter is working correctly. Try using a different charger if possible.
  • Check the power cable for any visible damage.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect the charger and remove any connected peripherals (mouse, keyboard, etc.).
  • Hold down the Refresh button (circular arrow key) and then press the Power button for at least 10 seconds.
  • Release both buttons and see if the Chromebook boots up.

Battery Reset:

  • Unplug the charger.
  • Hold down the Power button for at least 7 seconds.
  • Plug the charger back in and try turning on the Chromebook.

Enter Recovery Mode:

  • Press and hold Esc + Refresh, then press the Power button.
  • Release the Power button, but continue holding Esc + Refresh until the recovery screen appears.
  • If you see a message about Chrome OS missing or damaged, follow the on-screen instructions to recover the system.

Advanced Troubleshooting Steps

Check for Display Issues:

  • Connect your Chromebook to an external monitor using HDMI or VGA (if available) to see if there is a display issue with the internal screen.

Internal Hardware Check:

  • If you're comfortable with it, open the back panel of the Chromebook (after ensuring it's completely powered off and unplugged) and check for any loose connections, particularly the battery and display cable connections.
  • Ensure the battery is properly connected to the motherboard.

Powerwash (Factory Reset):

  • If you manage to get the Chromebook to boot up, consider performing a Powerwash to reset it to factory settings. This can sometimes resolve persistent software issues.
  • Go to Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Powerwash > Restart.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
