Does a notebook work without a battery?

 

I have an HP Elitebook 2570pP which can no longer be booted up.

 

When you press the power button, nothing happens, with or without the battery inserted.

 

I tried two power supplies, both of which worked (tested with another HP notebook).

Does the battery have to work so that the notebook can boot up? Is there some “device” from HP that monitors the battery?

 

I know that you can also operate a notebook without a battery (only via a power supply).
