HP Pavilion Laptop 15-cw0xxx

Hello there,

I have had a persisting issue with my HP Pavilion Laptop 15-cw0xxx since around the time I purchased it two years ago. Sometimes, after closing the lid, I'll return to the laptop hours later or sometimes even the next day and hear the fan running relatively loudly. This would usually also drain my battery completely but I usually leave the laptop on charge.
When I attempt to open the lid, the power button is on but the screen remains black. Nothing I have tried will make the screen turn on other than holding down the power button until the laptop is shut down, then it will turn on no problem. The fan also remains unusally loud before shutting the laptop down.
This usually happens once or twice a week.
If anyone could give me any advice or indication as to why this issue is persisting then please let me know, I would be incredibly grateful.

Win10 has enabled a new hibernation process known as Fast Startup -- which is enabled BY DEFAULT. This is different from Fast Boot, which is a BIOS/UEFI option.

Fast Startup is supposed to dramatically speed up the booting process, but in some PCs, it actually slows it down or causes it to hang. It's also a new form of hibernation known as hybrid sleep -- and this causes battery drain to maintain the state of the PC while turned off.

Disabling Fast Startup might fix booting and shutdown problems.

There are two ways to disable FastStartup in Win10: (1) through the Control Panel, and (2) through an elevated command prompt.

Control Panel - Open Control Panel --> Power Options.
Select "Choose what the power buttons do"
Select "Change settings that are currently unavailable"
At the bottom of the Window, under Shutdown settings, uncheck the box regarding fast startup

Elevated command prompt - run the following command:
REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Power" /V HiberbootEnabled /T REG_dWORD /D 0 /F

In both cases, reboot Windows.

NOW, FastStartup is disabled.

Thank you for response, unfortunately I had already attempted to disable the fast start-up several months ago in an attempt to fix this issue, but to no avail. The issue persisted and I have not yet re-enabled this function. 

Are there any other fixes you may be able to recommend? Or could it perhaps be a hardware issue? (My laptop has been kept in good condition physically, but I suppose you can never be sure)

Windows Updates come out once a week, Tuesday or Wednesday, and since you can't disable those, they will lock up your PC and drive up the processor to 100% and spin up the fan -- until they are done.  So, if you're getting this issue once a week, that is likely the problem.

 

But if you're getting this more often, I have no idea what it is -- sorry.
