Pavilion dv6
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP Pavilion dv6 HDD failure.  Failure ID: 90C3PA-5QXAGS-MFH14K-60CX03.

Does this code mean anything in particular?  And can the HDD be brought back to life?  Or do I need to buy a new one and reinstall Windows 10?

Hi:

Those fancy codes spend all of their energy generating your PC's serial number, and provide little useful information as to the specific problem at hand.

Below is the report generated by the failure code you posted, minus your notebook's serial number.

Failure Information
Failure ID Tag Checksum HP Serial Number Test Date Failure Code Device Includes Error Message
90C3PA-5QXAGS-MFH14K-60CX03.OKXXXXXXXXXX1/26/21301StorageFloppy Drive, Hard Drive, Memory Drive, Optical Drive, SCSI, Tape DriveHard Disk 1 SMART Hard Drive Detects Imminent Failure

You are going to have to install a new hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

If you can still get into Windows, back up any files you need to save onto a portable hard drive.

Below is the link to the service manual, where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.

You may want to consider replacing the 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a better performing 2.5" solid state drive (SSD).

After you replace the drive, you can reinstall W10 for free by making bootable installation media using the media creation tool from the link below.

Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

If you are asked to enter a product key during the installation process, select the 'I don't have a product key' option.
