Hello everyone,
I bought this laptop on 21/08/2021 and it has been running great since then.
Until I did upgrade the RAM from 1x8GB with a kit of 2x8GB DDR4 3200.
The kit has been recommended by the Crucial website : Micron Technology CT8G4SFRA32A.C16FH
Before doing so, I also made sure to upgrade the bios to the latest version (F35 from 23/09/2024).
I also run Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC x64 version 21H2 Build 19044.5854.
I did run memtest for 10 passes and no errors did show up.
The laptop runs perfectly, no BSOD while using it (surfing, encoding movies or even playing some games like Dark Souls 3).
It just won't wake up anymore when it goes to deep sleep. I have to do a hard reset with the power button.
The laptop comes with an AMD Ryzen 3 5300U which officially supports a maximum of 16GB.
My feelings is HP didn't test that board with 16GB as those entry level laptops with Ryzen 3 mostly ship with 8GB only.
I guess a bios update would improve the behavior of the computer.
Is it possible to have a look at it ?
Thanks in advance !

@r3b0rn80, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
From what you've described, the laptop works flawlessly under load (gaming, encoding, etc.) and passes MemTest86, which strongly suggests that the RAM kit is indeed compatible at a hardware level. However, the inability to wake from deep sleep (S3/S4) typically points to a power management or firmware issue, particularly when third-party RAM is introduced.
Update AMD Chipset Drivers
Ensure you have the latest AMD chipset drivers, as they include power management support for sleep and resume states.
Download the latest AMD Chipset Drivers for Ryzen 5300U (AMD official)
After installing, reboot the system.
Adjust Sleep Power Settings in Windows
- Windows 10 LTSC may default to S3 sleep, which can have compatibility issues with certain RAM configurations.
- Press Win + X → Power Options
- Click Additional power settings
- Next to your active plan, click Change plan settings
- Click Change advanced power settings
- Expand Sleep > Allow hybrid sleep → Set to Off
- Expand PCI Express > Link State Power Management → Set to Off
Disable Modern Standby (if applicable)
Some HP laptops implement Modern Standby (S0ix), which behaves differently from traditional S3 sleep.
You can check if Modern Standby is enabled:
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:
powercfg /a - If you see "Standby (S0 Low Power Idle)", you're using Modern Standby.
- Disabling it requires UEFI-level changes and may not always be possible, but it's worth checking your BIOS Setup (F10 on startup) for a setting like "S3 Mode" or "Sleep State" and toggling it (if available).
Try XMP/Memory Training Reset
Sometimes, after installing new RAM, BIOS may not properly train the RAM voltage/timings for sleep/resume transitions.
- Power down the laptop
- Remove both RAM sticks
- Hold the power button for 30 seconds (drain residual power)
- Reinstall RAM and boot into BIOS (F10) → Hit F9 to load BIOS defaults, then F10 to save and exit
Optional Test
Try installing only one 8GB Crucial stick in slot 1, then test sleep/wake behavior. If it works, test the other stick. If both pass individually, but not in dual-channel config, this further points to a BIOS-level optimization issue, not faulty RAM.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
