Hello, I am the network administrator for a school district that has many HP laptops for student use. We have several models that we have purchased over the years, and we continue to have the same problems with a particular set. HP 5100 series (5101, 5102, and 5103) mini notebooks running Windows 7 Professional seem to have some issue with the touch pads. Intermittently a user profile will no longer be able to use the touch pad. If that user logs off and another user logs on, the touch pad starts working again.
Here is our problem: our student accounts are pretty locked down as far as what privileges they have on our machines, and do not have access to the control panel or the pointing device properties. So they should not be able to disable the touch pad even if they tried. This also means that we cannot check to see if the touch pad has been disabled because we cannot access the pointing device properties from that user, and when logging on as another user the touch pad is working normally. The only way we can fix this is to delete the profile. Then when they log in again, it creates a new profile and the touch pad is normal... until it happens again at some random time. This is obviously a problem, because that user can't use the computer until we are able to get to it and delete the profile. We have updated the BIOS and uninstalled/reinstalled the latest version of mouse/touchpad drivers on all of these computers, but nothing seems to stop this from continuing to happen. Does anybody out there have any ideas on this?

I suggest installing the latest trackpad software on each of the notebooks and if you would like to download the software on the server make sure to add an exeption for the program to run. Also, running windows 7 professional on an intel atom processor is putting great stress on the laptop esecially if they are netbooks.
Sometimes students can turn on/off the trackpad because the top left corner has a sensor for double tapping and it turns the trackpad on/off.
