I should have known better than to stray away from DELL. So I bought this HP ENVY 17 for my son to go to college. He complained that the laptop was "really hot" and I questioned that but had him buy a cooling fan. More recently he said the video screen was "vibrating" and the machine was "locking up".
So after reading several threads here on HP Support and non-HP sites, I find out that HP designed and built a piece of crap that is designed to overheat - didn't user test it - and doesn't have a solution to fix it.
Being an IT executive consultant, HP's lack of customer support is a problem not lost on me - and - won't be lost on my hardware and services recommendations to my clients.
I assume HP will be getting out of the PC business.
Once I compile the list of fixes - I'll repost in one place later.

hi guys
wot ive done to try and stop this crap computer from overheating ,upgraded the ram from 2g to 4g, removed the ram and hard drive cover and sit it on a cooling stand... its helps but still overheats. hp needs to recall this machine its a health hazard ..if my 3 year old son touches this computer it will burn him and hp you will be in big trouble!!

goto power setting, under your current settings, goto cpu maximum current state. it will most likely say 100%.. turn it down to 85-90 percent. I keep mine at 85, but 90 will be good still at max speed. you will never see any difference unless your process is always maxed out...
amazing those dumb-ass hp technicians cannot figure that out.. if that was done on all their laptops esp the tx and tm series touchscreens, they would not burn out..
leave a message here if you liked my answer and say how stupid the hp techs are.. but we know most of them can barly speak english and doubtfully have ever seen a computer or could buy one making a few bucks a day.. If hp would hire real techs from the usa maybe they could figure out the real problems instead of just trying to grasp english!

After making an Exec level complaint many months ago, and lately having completed negotiations with HP Customer Service, this is the story that I think all Envy owners will face:
1) My 1 year warrenty ended about a week before the heat-related shutdowns
2) I bought a cooling pad that helps, but it is still not possible to play video etc (note the vibrating video is another problem but easily resolved)
3) That means working away from home is next to impossible - all symptoms previously posted
4) HP offered repair at my cost: over £300 (UK) and 3 weeks without a vital computer
5) HP's policy is not to replace the computer, no matter how severe the problems
6) There is tacit acknowledgement by Customer Service as to the heat problems, not that I think they can ever deny it
7) After more negotiation, the repair cost was brought down a bit, but is still unaffordable, still multiple hundreds
😎 The Customer Service rep was extremely friendly and pleasant - it is HP's policy in this specific scenario that is "locked" and so the outcome fails - I did put a formal complaint on record
9) The conclusion is that I will put the costs towards a non-HP branded computer that is reliable - that also means I will never recommend HP computers to anybody
10) In my travels with the hot Envy I have come across many people who either had or have one - there is certainly community spirit and empathy
I think it is tremendously sad when a global corporation gets to this point in its customer relations. Trust is broken. That must be one of the few core pillars that any successful business is built on?

It is getting worse.
I cant work continiously for more than 1.5 hours.
It spontaniously shuts down because overheats.
Ant it REALLY hurts - the temperature is VERY high

Try using Skype with video. No call will ever last more than 2 minutes before shutdown. It must be a feature?
Part of the "support" interaction (see earlier comments) included running Furmark - basically a program that heats your computer up (CPU etc).
As the support agent explained that this may take half an hour or an hour, we reached 109 Centigrade in a few minutes. I think we proved the point.
