HP ENVY x360 - m6-aq005dx (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi! I have a problem booting my laptop. It shows "Automatically repair" and then a blue screen "An unexpected I/O error has occurred - Error code: 0xc00000e9".  When I try to boot with USB, it shows "The selected boot device failed. Press ENTER to continue". I tried to upgrade to a SSD unit but it's the same. These are things that I did without success:

- I enabled "Legacy Support" on BIOS.

- I changed the priority in "Boot" option on BIOS.

- I disabled "Secure boot" on BIOS.

- Tested with "Hardware Diagnostics" (F2) (success)

- Tested with different RAM.

- Tested without battery.

But it's weird because, if I shut down it for two days and try to turn on could boot OK. I guess could be a electrical or short problem with the motherboard. Anyone in the same condition.

I'm sorry, but what you are saying does not make sense...

Windows PCs come preconfigured in one of two modes: UEFI or BIOS.  Windows 10 PCs from HP come preconfigured in UEFI mode.  If you change that to Legacy or CSM mode, Windows will not boot. Period.  Does not matter how long you let the PC sit turned off.  It still is not going to boot.

Thanks for you reply! Could not make sense for you but it's hard to explain. Now, the laptop is in UEFI Mode and goes into "Automatically repair" or "please wait" and then:

(blue screen)

"Recovery

There was a problem with a device connected to your PC

An unexpected I/O error has occurred.

File: \windows\system32\winload.efi

Error code: 0xc00000e9

This problem can happen when a removable storage device is removed while it's in use or is falling. Properly connecting any removable storage and restarting your PC may fix this problem."

This is what happens when you switch modes -- file systems get corrupted.

Microsoft is trying to recover the corrupted file system, but that failed, so it's trying over and over again -- and will never succeed.

This problem is very difficult, if not impossible to fix -- from the standpoint of making repairs and leaving your stuff intact. Some steps for trying this are listed below, but they are very hard to do and if they do not work, you are faced with doing a complete Windows reinstallation to get your PC back working again.
----------

First thing you need to do is see if you can restart in Safe mode -- by doing these steps: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2304-boot-into-safe-mode-windows-10-a.html

If you don't know how to start using Advanced Startup Options, then read this: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-boot-advanced-startup-options-windows-10-a.html

Then, follow these steps to reset Windows Update: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/24742-reset-windows-update-windows-10-a.html

If these work, when you finally reboot, you should then be able to login to a working Windows desktop.

If these don't work, then report that back here as we will then have to provide you information on reinstalling Windows.

Thanks for your reply. I tried but I couldn't enter in Safe Mode. When I press the option nothing happens. Any idea??

As I mentioned, this issue is very difficult if not impossible to fix.  So, your only recourse now is to use external media to do a complete factory reset of your PC:

Since your PC can not successfully do an internal factory reset, your ways to accomplish this are the following:
- Factory reset using external HP image you make
- Factory reset using external HP image you buy

Each of these is discussed in some detail below ...

---------- Factory reset using external HP image you make ----------
HP provides a Cloud Recovery tool that you can use, together with a 32GB USB stick, to create your on HP reset media.

Here is the link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06162205

This works the same as the factory reset described above.

---------- Factory reset using external HP image you buy ----------
For those PCs not supported by the Cloud Recovery, in some cases, HP offers Recover Media for sale. This can not be downloaded; instead, it must be ordered from HP.

HP Recovery Media is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities.

In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks.

You can look online for Recovery Media starting with the linked paged: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

Once there, input your Product name or number. On your Software and Drivers Download page, select your Operating System and and Version. Click &quot;Update&quot;.<br><br>If HP Recovery Media is available for your machine, down near the bottom of the page, you will see an entry for Order Recovery Media-CD/DVD/USB. Click the &quot;+&quot; symbol to expand that entry and click on Order Media for details.

Or, if you prefer, you can do the same by contacting HP Customer Support.

HP contact info: https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp?openCLC=true

If HP no longer carries the media you need, another site you should check for HP Recovery Media is: http://www.computersurgeons.com/

These work the same as the factory reset described above.
