OMEN by HP - 17-an012dx
Microsoft Windows 11

At boot, my laptop is asking me to run diagnostics on drive 2.  When I hit F2 and enter the UEFI diagnostic menu, I only can run diagnostics on drive 1.  Is there any way to force it to drive 2 without needing to open it up and remove drive 1?

You may need the latest UEFI diagnostics

HP releases newer UEFI diagnostics periodically.
When you select F2 during boot you are requesting UEFI diagnostics.
There is an updated diagnostics package Click Here
Look for the phrase 'issues outside the OS',
Expand the'+'symbol and click the DOWNLOAD button.
The version of the UEFI diagnostics is shown at the left of that DOWNLOAD button.
When you press F2 to run diagnostics please ensure the version is the new one.

This UEFI update can be downloaded on any system to a USB flash for later installation.

If Windows is working, then verify that you have two drives

Using the windows command prompt, please run the following command and report back what it reveals if you want help.

wmic diskdrive get model, size, mediaType, status

for example

If you have powershell then run it from the administrators command prompt to get better information:

powershell Get-PhysicalDisk

How do I get past the diagnostic alert when the system is booting?

"Hard disk error please run the hard disk test in System Diagnostics Hard Disk 2 (3f2)
F2 System Diagnostics
For more information..."

So I am unable to get past this screen.

I spammed the F10 key when restarting and got into the UEFI screen.  I looked at Boot Options and tried the UEFI Boot Order, tried to look at the OS Boot Manager and the popup "OS Boot Manager is not found"

Tapping the escape key may work better than F10 of fast systems.

Were any drives listed in the BIOS?  There should be 2 drives.

I assume the m.2 SSD is bad but according to this parts list you have only a 1.0tb HDD

https://partsurfer.hp.com/?searchtext=1KV90UA

Try your serial number at the above site and see if it provides more information

page 2 of the service manual shows a lot of drive options

Your NVME is probably bad.  Replace it with any budget priced Gen3

Typical Gen3 M.2

Use your HP cloud recover to install factory software unless you have an image backup.

You will need an NVME adapter like this so you can (if possible) recover documents

You can also use another computer to download the updated UEFI diagnostics and boot those diagnostics on your laptop to do a better analysis.

Thanks for your help!

Had to update my bootable USB drive which took longer than expected. I booted into Ubuntu liveUSB, it shows only a 1 Tb SSD, not the stock one.

Gparted shows only the SSD and the USB drive. However the first partition of the SSD shows a warning that it was unable to detect a file system.

Sorry for the picture of a screen.
I can build a Win11 boot USB and try a repair.   I don't know why it thinks I need to check disk 2. There were no disks showing in the UEFI screen.  I'm going to backup the large partition.  I'm assuming that I can't do a migration to a new drive and I'll need to restore from backup.

The diagnostics can be installed from a USB drive without being able to get into windows?  Details please... Even a link to where to find out 🙂

I know it's older and not really supported. Things I've done to keep it running:
Replaced the fans

Replaced the M.2 SSD

Replaced the battery which promptly failed, appears the charging circuit is faulty and now it's a laptop-shaped desktop machine

replaced the keyboard, which was fun since the US version has plastic welds instead of screws. Had to use a razor knife to remove those 😞

Found it, made the USB and right now I am running the extensive test.

Are you dual booting Linux and Windows?  Can I assume that Linux boot is for diagnostics?

I missed this post you made earlier

Are you able to run the F2 diagnostics?  if diagnostics do not complete there may be a real hardware problem.

Can you put the original battery back in?  Possibly the test hangs on the battery test. If diagnostics show up select only the memory test.  Since you booted Linux you should have a memory test as a boot option.

You mentioned earlier that you replaced the m.2.   Does the motherboard in this disassembly video match your system?    At 1:26 it shows a 2.5 HDD and below the HDD is the space where an m.2 would fit.

I am not sure if you can do a cloud recovery.  Try this:  On another Windows system that you have admin rights on, obtain HP Cloud Recovery from the Microsoft store.  Enter your full product ID including the # and the 3 characters after it.  If you have cloud recovery you can install HP Factory windows 10 on the m.2.  I believe you have an older system that uses HP Recovery Manager which can create an install USB from recovery files on the original drive in an HP recovery partition.  You may no longer have that partition.

I can provide instructions on win11 clean install using Rufus.

Using the Linux boot can you pass M.2 disk and memory test?

Which drive are you booting from?

try

lshw -class disk

do both drives show up?

root@dual-linux:/home/jstateson# lshw -class disk
*-disk
description: ATA Disk
product: KINGSTON SA400S3
physical id: 0.0.0
bus info: scsi@0:0.0.0
logical name: /dev/sda
version: B1D1
serial: 50026B7782972E1F
size: 111GiB (120GB)
capabilities: gpt-1.00 partitioned partitioned:gpt

run smartctl to scan for drives and test each drive

root@dual-linux:/home/jstateson# smartctl --scan
/dev/sda -d scsi # /dev/sda, SCSI device

root@dual-linux:/home/jstateson# smartctl -a /dev/sda

The Extensive test did not find any errors, and no second drive.  Smart shows 0% wear and all other tests passed.  Sounds like I may need to pop it open to make sure I don't have a second drive 🙂  I don't recall adding one but I've not had this open in a while.  Sounds like my main option is to pull the files (I have a weekly backup as well) and wipe/rebuild the disk.  My bios/uefi on this machine are the last released version for this model.
