For the past few weeks my laptop has been acting funky. Here's a little background:

* Battery is only 1 year, 5 months old

* 99% of the time the laptop is PLUGGED IN, so I'm not even using the battery

Recently the laptop has been powering itself down on its own WHILE PLUGGED IN, without warning, and when I power it back up it gives me a low battery message. I check the battery and it says 16% charged, then 10 seconds later I check again and it says 100% charged.

A few weeks ago I used the HP diagnostic tool to check the battery and it said I should consider a replacement and that I might be eligible for a warranty for it. The link to attempt to learn more about the warranty was broken. Then I ran the tool again today and it claims the battery is "OK" which is indicative that it is working correctly.

In PowerShell this is the information I found on the battery... it was not helpful as it does not show the battery's name:

Installed batteries

Information about each currently installed battery

  BATTERY 1

NAME Primary

MANUFACTURER HP

SERIAL NUMBER -

CHEMISTRY LION DESIGN

CAPACITY 31,786 mWh

FULL CHARGE CAPACITY 31,786 mWh

CYCLE COUNT -

Clearly there is something wrong with the battery but I just don't know what. So my questions are as follows:

1. How do I figure out if I am still eligible for warranty for this battery?

2. How do I even figure out what battery is in my device?

3. Based on all of the aforementioned, does it sound like it's a battery issue for why my device is randomly powering down on its own? I don't think it's a virus--I don't use this device often and it is well-protected.

Thank you!

1. The HP Product Warranty Check webpage provides current warranty status, category and warranty end date. It also offers support solutions for your computer.

2. You need to know the product number of your notebook to determine the part number of the battery you're using. To find your product number, use HP Support Assistant or locate the product number on the product label.

You can just follow the Purchasing a Replacement Battery guide to figure out the battery number.

3. When the battery isn't calibrated in a while, it could send incorrect information about its current capacity to the OS, which is probably why that happens. But you should get rid of it after you've calibrated your battery. If the problem keeps recurring and your battery charge drops abruptly and significantly in a short while when you're using your computer, it's time to get a new battery.
