Hi @Mrrandyjr123,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC might be experiencing issues with its internal display or related components. Since it works when connected to an external monitor, it suggests that the issue is likely isolated to the laptop's screen or the connections to it. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try before taking it to a repair shop.

Check Display Settings:

  • Ensure the Laptop is Set to Use Both Displays:
    • Connect your laptop to an external monitor or projector.
    • Go to Settings > System > Display.
    • Ensure that the laptop's screen is set as one of the displays. You may need to select Duplicate or Extend displays.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Power Off and Disconnect External Devices:
    • Disconnect all external devices including the external monitor.
    • Remove the battery if it's removable.
    • Hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
    • Reinsert the battery and power on the laptop.

Check for Loose Connections:

  • Inspect the Screen Connection:
    • If you're comfortable doing so, carefully open the laptop and check the cable connection between the motherboard and the screen. Sometimes, these connections can become loose.

Boot into Safe Mode:

  • Try Safe Mode:
    • Restart your laptop and repeatedly press F8 (or Shift + F8 in some cases) to boot into Safe Mode.
    • If the display works in Safe Mode, the issue might be related to your graphics drivers.

Update or Reinstall Graphics Drivers:

  • Update Drivers:
    • Connect to the external monitor.
    • Go to Device Manager > Display Adapters.
    • Right-click on your graphics adapter and select Update driver.
  • Reinstall Drivers:
    • If updating doesn't work, try uninstalling the driver and then restarting your laptop to let Windows reinstall the driver.

Check BIOS Settings:

  • Access BIOS:
    • Restart your laptop and press F2 or Delete (or the appropriate key for your model) to enter BIOS.
    • Check if the internal display is recognized in the BIOS settings.

External Display Only Setting:

  • Switch Display Modes:
    • Sometimes, pressing Fn + one of the function keys (F4, F5, etc., depending on your model) switches between display modes. Ensure it’s not set to external display only.

Perform a System Restore:

  • Restore to a Previous Point:
    • If the problem started recently, you can try performing a system restore to a point when the laptop was functioning correctly.

Check for Overheating:

  • Ensure Proper Ventilation:
    • Overheating can cause display issues. Ensure that the laptop is well-ventilated and check for dust buildup in the vents.

Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Run HP Diagnostics:
    • Many HP laptops come with built-in diagnostics. Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears. Then press F2 to run the diagnostics and see if any hardware issues are detected.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it might be a hardware problem such as a faulty display panel, a damaged cable, or an issue with the graphics chip.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
