Hi,
I have a HP steam laptop that won't turn on. The power button with light up and it'll make the turn on noise. But the screen remains black. The screen only turns on when I hard reset it several times.

Hi @MB228,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like there might be a few potential issues at play here. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.
- Check Power Connection: Ensure that your laptop is properly connected to a power source and that the power adapter is working correctly. Sometimes, a loose connection can cause issues with powering on.
- Remove External Devices: Disconnect any external devices (like USB drives, external monitors, etc.) from your laptop and then try turning it on again. Sometimes, a peripheral device can cause conflicts during the boot-up process.
- Perform a Hard Reset: Since you mentioned that the screen turns on after hard resetting the laptop several times, try performing a hard reset again. To do this, disconnect the power adapter, remove the battery (if possible), and hold down the power button for about 15-20 seconds. Then, reconnect the power adapter (and battery if you removed it) and try turning on the laptop.
- Check for Display Issues: After turning on the laptop, if the screen remains black, try shining a flashlight onto the screen to see if you can detect any faint images or text. If you can see faint images, it might be an issue with the laptop's backlight or display connection.
- Try External Monitor: Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using an HDMI cable (if available) and see if you get any display output on the external screen. If you do, it could indicate a problem with the laptop's internal display.
- Update Graphics Drivers: If you can access the laptop's desktop, try updating the graphics drivers to the latest version. Outdated or corrupted drivers can sometimes cause display issues.
- Run System Diagnostics: Many laptops, including HP models, come with built-in diagnostic tools that can help identify hardware problems. You can usually access these diagnostics by pressing a specific key combination (like F2 or Esc) during startup.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, it might be a hardware problem, such as a faulty display, motherboard, or graphics card.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
