Hard Drive Short DST Check Failed

Pavilion 15-g000na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Product ID : G7V83EA#ABU; Model HP Pavilion 15-g000na

My laptop suddenly hung and was completely unresponsive.  On attemptjng to restart I got the standard screen with the HP logo and a message "Preparing Automatic Repair", however all that happened was I got a black screen.  After several failed reboot attempts, I ran a System Quick Test which showed a Hard Drive Short DST Check failure with the Failure ID : GLM5UF-78K9S1-XD7V6J-60SFO3 (note that the second character in the last block is a zero and the penultimate character is an upper case letter o).

Clearly this does not look good!  Anyone know if there's anything I can do to fix the problem or at least recover data from my hard drive.

Hard Drive Short DST Check Failed

Hi,

You will need to replace the hard drive and reinstall the OS. You could go for a cheap SSD which would improve the everyday performance of the PC or use a 2.5" SATA3 Hard Drive

Example:

https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-BX500-240GB-2-5-Inch-Internal/dp/B07G3KRZBX/ref=sxin_0_ac_d_pm?ac_md=...

https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-BarraCuda-Internal-Drive-2-5-Inch/dp/B07H28QRKN/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1O53P...

On page 49 of service manual you can see how to replace the drive

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04886216

Once you have removed the hard drive you can try recovering your files by using a SATA to USB adapter

Example:

https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-SATA-USB-Cable-USB3S2SAT3CB/dp/B00HJZJI84/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=sa...

To reinstall Windows:

Download media creation tool from Microsoft on PC (different PC), run and create a bootable pendrive with the OS on it. (there is an explanation on the Microsoft web page on how to create the pendrive). Create the drive with Windows 10 Home 64-bit edition. Windows will automatically activate once installed and connected to the Internet.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you choose this option you will need to use the pendrive to perform a clean install of Windows 10. You might need to disable fastboot and secure boot in BIOS (probably not). So, insert the pendrive in the PC and it should boot directly from the drive. If not, turn off the PC by holding the power button. Press the power button and immediately keep pressing ESC until the startup menu appears and then press F9 and choose the pendrive in the boot menu. Once it boots from pendrive follow the procedure to install Windows.

When finished installing allow Windows to completely update and find all or most drivers. You can follow this process by going into settings > Security and update > click on Verify for updates. You might need to reboot a couple of times.

I recommend installing HP support assistant which will help keep your drivers up to date and much more. You can download the latest version from here.

Once completely updated you can go into device manager and see if there are any missing drivers (there will be yellow exclamation mark next to the device). You can find these drivers and software on HP support page for your product.

Hope it helps,

David
