Hi @DARTSMART,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing a screen flickering issue on your HP Notebook 15s-fq1514na, especially after it has been turned off for a few hours, this could be due to a few factors.
Here are some possible causes and steps you can try to fix the issue:
1. Turn off the Unit.
2. Disconnect the AC adapter.
3. Remove any discs from the disc drive.
4. Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.
5. Disconnect all nonessential peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, and USB flash drives.
6. Disconnect the AC adapter press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.
7. Reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the computer.
Step 2
Turn off the unit and please press and hold the Windows key + letter B key and the power button together for 30 seconds after 30 seconds, 1st release the power button but keep holding the Windows key and B key for ten more seconds and then release these two keys If done correctly, you will see the display flashing once. Please attempt it thrice as this step and Restart the unit
Step3
The unit has to be turned off, Press Win+ V while holding these two keys then Press the Power button, continue to hold all three keys for 30 seconds and then release the Power button first and then release these two keys Please attempt it thrice and then you may get a Pop-Up CMOS Check and it will restart the unit
Even if you don't get a Pop-up restart the unit manually after 3 attempts.
1. Update Graphics Drivers
- Flickering issues are often caused by outdated or corrupted graphics drivers.
- Go to Device Manager → Display adapters, right-click on your graphics card (e.g., Intel UHD or NVIDIA), and choose Update driver.
- You can also visit the HP website to download the latest graphics drivers for your specific model.
2. Check Power Settings
- Sometimes, power settings can affect the screen, particularly after the laptop has been off for a while.
- Go to Control Panel → Power Options, and select High Performance or adjust the Balanced plan to avoid any display power-saving settings.
3. Disable Adaptive Brightness
- Adaptive brightness can cause flickering when the system is adjusting the screen based on ambient light.
- To disable this:
- Open Settings → System → Display.
- Scroll down to Brightness and Color, and uncheck the box for Change brightness automatically when lighting changes.
4. BIOS Update
- If your BIOS is outdated, it could be causing the flickering issue. You can update the BIOS by visiting the HP Support website and downloading the latest version for your notebook.
- Make sure to follow the instructions carefully when updating the BIOS.
5. Check for Windows Updates
- Ensure your system is fully up-to-date, as some Windows updates might fix display-related issues.
- Go to Settings → Windows Update and check for any pending updates.
6. Hardware Test HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures
- It’s possible that the issue is hardware-related, such as a loose screen connector or an issue with the display itself.
- You can run the HP Hardware Diagnostics tool to check for any hardware issues:
- Turn off the notebook.
- Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
- Press F2 to enter the diagnostics and run the tests for the display.
