You will need to install a new M.2 SSD and reinstall the operating system.

Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the M.2 SSD removal and replacement procedure.

The product specs indicate that your notebook came with a 256 GB M.2 SATA SSD.

You can replace the drive with another M.2 SATA drive, but chapter 1 of the service manual also indicates the notebook will support the even faster performing M.2 NVMe SSD's.

It appears however, that in order to run a NVMe SSD your notebook has to have the F.12 BIOS update or newer installed.

When installing the operating system how do you know which one to use win 10 32 or 64?

HP Recommended

You would reinstall Windows 10 64 bit on your notebook.

Do i install windows before doing the bios upgrade

HP Recommended

Yes you would have to run the BIOS update in windows but if you're not at BIOS version F.12, a NVMe drive won't work, so you wouldn't be able to install Windows on it.

If you're running F 12 now, there should be no need to update the BIOS to install Windows on a NVMe SSD.

If you are at an older BIOS version, you'll have to install a M.2 SATA SSD, because you don't have a working SATA SSD to update the BIOS with.

You're very welcome.

That's great news you were able to get the notebook back up and running.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to help you with getting data off the bad drive.

It is probably not possible since the drive doesn't even show up when you install it in a USB to M.2 SATA/NVMe enclosure.

It's solid state.

It usually works or it doesn't, unlike a mechanical hard drive which has a slight chance of data recovery.
