When this incorrect BIOS is auto-installed the reboot consistently fails and I have to reset the CMOS to the previous version (F.07) to make it thru startup. Anyone else have similar issues? If so, how did you get HP to stop sending these killer bios updates?

Thanks for that work around. Another is to go to C:\Windows\Firmware and delete the *.bin file found there in the period between Windows Update saying 'Restart now' and actually doing so. Can't install what isn't there. The base issue is that HP seems to think my laptop belongs in a wrong support stream that keeps sending incorrect bios updates for my laptop. Has happened twice now since I got this laptop. Looking at there download options on HP support keeps presenting the two wrong BIOS updates (one labelled F04 and the latest wrong one F31) . The one it came with (and so far, the only one that works) is labelled F07. Since I'm beyond warranty, it appears I must pay for support for a problem that exists in their records.

If you are getting the file from Windows update, run the Microsoft Hide Windows update utility that I zipped up and attached below.
Download, unzip and run the utility.
It should find the BIOS update that is causing the problem.
Check the box to hide the update.
The utility will run again and then report the problem is 'Fixed.'
Close out of the utility, restart the PC and you should not get that update anymore.
