HP Laptop - 15s-eq1156ng
Microsoft Windows 11

So, i have a problem. A serious one even.

When I press the power button, the fans turn on, the power indicator on the right hand side turns on and, if plugged in, the plug-in-light comes on, even in orange if charging.

But that is literally all my computer does. The screen stays off, no other lights flash, no beeping sounds.

What happened immediately beforehand:

I had some minor issues ever since HP-support assist prompted me to update my Bios to F.75.

Once in a while, the computer would freeze for a couple seconds, if not plugged in even crash.

One day i had some time on my hand, today actually, and i diagnosed around a bit... to no one's surprise the F.75 Bios was at fault.

Now, i am aware i should have known better and rolled back. But alas, i didn't.

I went ahead and found myself an even newer, better version. F.77.

I went ahead and downloaded HP's newest Bios update and it installed normally.

Then, when it went to reboot... nothing. And nothing ever since.

So here some of what i tried:

-Getting into the Bios menu on startup.

-Powering off, removing the battery, holding the power button for three minutes and eleven seconds, powering back on.

-Re-seating the RAM

- Removing the RAM

-Removing my boot (and only) drive

-Making one of them recovery USB and starting it with a windows key + B press.

-Praying

-Raging at the world in futility

None of these steps have produced any different outcome or even clues as to the exact nature of the problem.

Now, i have used the Google and its cousins to prod at the issue and realized i am far from the only one with this issues, in fact it appears quite common with this line of notebook.

The only somewhat plausible solution at this point is re-flushing the BIOS onto that little chip where it usually dwells, however that appears to only work some of the time and, quite frankly, considering labor costs, buying a new one would be an option.

Not HP though. Never again HP.

First Harry Potter now Hewlett Packard, must this decade ruin everything?

Anyway. I would be grateful for any suggestions, maybe some of the Wizards that reside here have some Konami-Cheat that might help or insights from the spheres which mortals like myself dare not wander in.

If anyone gives me the Google AI troubleshooting steps, i will mercilessly ignore them though.

But seriously, thank you in advance for the time you take out of your day to help me with mine.

Cheerio!

Hi @Romeo221,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.

Given everything you’ve described fans on, power light on, no POST, no display, no blinking codes, and no response to Win+B recovery this does line up with a classic case of a corrupted BIOS region on the board that’s preventing the system from initializing even basic hardware. Still, before we accept that to better understand what’s happening, could you clarify a few things for me?

1. Are there any lights on the laptop at all (e.g., on the power button, near the charging port)?
2. If the AC adapter has a power brick, is the indicator light on the brick lit up?
3. Have you tried a different wall outlet that you know is working (e.g., tested with a lamp)?
4. Do you hear any sounds from the laptop, like a faint fan spin or beeping, when you press the power button?
5. Did anything happen right before this issue occurred, like a power surge, a liquid spill, or a drop?

1. Verify Power Source

Ensure the AC adapter is securely plugged into a wall outlet that you know is working (you can test it with another device, like a lamp).
Check that the adapter cable is firmly connected to the laptop's charging port.

2.Attempt BIOS Recovery / CMOS Reset

This can sometimes resolve deeper hardware initialization problems that prevent power on.

Please try this:
1. Turn off the computer and make sure the  AC adapter is plugged in .
2. Press and hold the  Windows key + B key at the same time.
3. While still holding those keys, press the power button for 2-3 seconds and then release it. Continue holding the Windows + B keys until the HP BIOS Update screen appears or you hear a series of beeps. Let me know if this happens.
4. If Windows + B doesn't work Please try the exact same process (hold Windows + V while pressing power button for 1 second) instead. Hold the keys for several seconds. If successful, you may see a message about the CMOS being reset.

Please let me know if any screen appears, you hear beeps, or you see a message about CMOS reset.

Even though you’ve already moved on to a new laptop, I’m here to help if you want to diagnose what happened or try to get the HP device working again

I hope this helps.

Really? I get the AI Chatbot and nothing else?

First, Lights. As per my original post, yes, there are two lights. Charging indicator and Power indicator. When plugged in the charging indicator will even turn orange if charging and stay white when not.

Second, powerbrick. No it does not have lights on it to light up.

Third, Power. Yes it is plugged in. Yes it is plugged into a power outlet. Yes it plugged into a power outlet that has power.

fourth, general reading comprehension. Fans spin spin spin and continue spinning after the power button is pressed, not at 100% but i would estimate... 50%? There is no beeping.

Fifth, oh gee. No, nothing other than the things is described have happened prior.

The offered solution was, as expected, entirely useless.

I would like this escalated to a human representative.

Hi @Romeo221,

Sorry if you felt that way  but Im not the AI Chatbot.

Since the concern that you had explains "no post" or "no power " that means the computer isn't even starting the initial power-on self-test (POST), likely due to a power supply issue, a failed internal hardware component. Common causes include a dead battery, a faulty power adapter, a bad power port, or a hardware failure such as with the motherboard, RAM, or CMOS battery.

So kindly confirm if you have performed the above steps and is there any response from the computer .

Yes, i tried all steps.

No, there was no response of any kind.

As i already mentioned, the fans do work. The power indicator and the charging indicator do light up.

For some reason, the USB ports even charge a phone when plugged in.

So i do not think it is an issue of power delivery.

My question is if you have any advice on the windows + B or V timing. I read different and very conflicting things about how precise the length of the start button push needs to be.

Also, when trying that recovery USB thing, will a USB 2.0 32 GB stick work? some say no, it must be 8 GB max, others claim otherwise.

Do i need to remove my internal storage to do that recovery thing? I read that that would force a Crisis mode, but that the folder structure on the USB would need to modified with the model number on the board. Any resources for that?

Small addendum: if and only if a usb stick is plugged in freshly before pressing the power button, the memory indicator light will light op once for a quarter of a second upon start.

Powering off and on again, the light will not flash unless the stick is plugged into a different usb port.

Curious.

If i come off as rude or unfriendly, please be aware that it is not towards you as a person but the company you work for and its general incompetence that has lead me here.

I just got a private message that told me in a great many words to kindly get lost and try my luck over at the confused person operating the phone support.

I will take this as a confirmation that my initial thoughts were 100% correct and HP is at fault for providing an unstable BIOS update.

So in case this thread pops up in one of the many google searches of people who have seemingly the exact same problem, let me save you some work: You screwed yourself the moment you bought from HP and now that you already gave them your money, kindly go cry to the chat-bot of your choice.

Have fun.

Small addendum: The message in question now was deleted... This truly made my day
