Hi,

Since a recent Windows Update, which included a BIOS update, my laptop has been rebooting at random.

There is no message displayed (even after changing the options to not reboot automatically) and there are obvious clues in the Event Viewer apart from a Kernel-Power (Event ID 41) error "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.".

The laptop is only weeks old and has been absolutely fine until the recent BIOS/Windows update.

I've run the quick hardware diagnostics and also the 'check system files' option.

I've run the HP Operating System Diagnostics too..

@SteveWeller

I reviewed your post and I understand that the computer is rebooting randomly.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

What is the product number of your computer?

What is the operating system you are using?

What is the version of BIOS installed on the computer?

Meanwhile, I recommend you follow the steps in the below article and check if it helps.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Hi,

I may have sorted the issue - not 100% sure yet. I have updated to a patched version of the Nvidia drivers and also changed the performance control in Omen Command Centre to 'Comfort'.

Also disabled most of the Power/Sleep settings.

The fan seems more obvious now, but so far no crashes.

Product No:  1L6W2EA#ABU

BIOS version: F.15

Graphics Driver: Nvidia Game Ready 456.71 (with hotfix)

O/S: Windows 10

Perfect, I am really glad to hear that!

If any other questions arise, please feel free to write back to me.

Hi,

I changed the Omen Performance Control back to 'Default' and although OK for some time it has rebooted again today.

Seems something is still wrong if 'default' doesn't work and I have to set performance to 'Comfort'?

Just had another reboot even with the performance set to 'comfort' so that may be a red herring.

I still suspect it was a recent Windows Update which included a BIOS update... No issues that I can remember before that

Follow the below steps and check if it helps.

Press ‘Win + I’ shortcut keys to open Windows Settings app.

Click on ‘Update & Security’, then go to the ‘Troubleshoot’ section from the left-side menu.

Scroll downwards a bit and click on the ‘Power’ option.

Click on ‘Run the Troubleshooter’. It will start detecting the problems and if it founds, go ahead fixing it.

If you continue facing the issue, then follow the below steps.

On your keyboard, press ‘Windows key + R’ and type ‘Powercfg.cpl’ in it.

Hit the ‘Enter’ key to open power options in the control panel.

From the left-hand side, click on ‘Choose what the power buttons do’.

Then, click on the link ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’.

From the bottom given power button options, uncheck the ‘Turn on fast startup’ option.

Click on ‘Save changes’ button.

If the issue persists, follow the below steps.

Go to the ‘Start’ menu and type ‘Control panel’ then hit the ‘Enter’ key.

From the top-right filter, choose ‘Large icons’ and navigate to the ‘Power Options’,

Click and open the ‘Power options’.

Select the power plan according to your requirement and click on ‘Change plan settings’.

Click on ‘Change advanced power settings’.

In the power options windows, click on the button ‘Restore plan defaults’.

Click on ‘Apply’ and then ‘OK’ button.
