Pavilion dv7
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My laptop shut itself off.  It was plugged in at the time and did not notify me that the battery was running out. I thought it might be due to overheating, so I hit it with some canned air and waited a little bit. I pressed the power button, it came on for a split second, and then shut off again. After waiting some more, I tried again - the machine turned on, but the screen remained black, and the laptop shut itself off again after 30 seconds. I recently replaced the battery and the power cord, so I doubt it's a problem with either.

Hi @Jembanni

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd suggest testing the hardware -

1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
3. On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
4. Click Extensive Test.

Try updating the BIOS - HP Consumer Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System)

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

The screen doesn't turn on, it just remains black, I cannot access the Bios. Still shuts itself off after a few moments.

Appreciate you trying the steps. This looks like a hardware issue. Please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your computer.
