Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I own a hp pavilion dv6 entertainment laptop. When I press the power button, the lights, fans and disc whir comes on for a few seconds, the screen remains off. After about 8 to 10 seconds the laptop goes off and then comes on again and stays on this time with the same fan, lights and disc whir but the screen still remains off. It doesn't even boot. It stays on like that till I press and hold the power button to put it off permanently. I've tried removing the battery and turning it on directly from the mains but it does the same thing, even used a new battery. I really need help with this as it's the only thing I have to do my work with.
