Product: HP ENVY - 17t-s100 CTO

Is there a way to start my 17T-S100 CTO with the power button removed to determine if the issue is in fact the power button

that needs replacement. There was never any issue with the computer prior to this. Also, can someone explain to me exactly what the plastic extrusion on the button does to the switch when  you depress it and it makes contact with the gold square that is attached to the power switch board?
