I have a laptop that wasn't turning on but had a blinking capslock(It was collecting error info after a kernel issue but it went off before finishing). I tried to upload a USB drive BIOS update but the screen hasn't come on but the capslock isn't blinking anymore. Any help will be greatly appreciated. My laptop is a HP notebook - 15-bs042nia

Hi @Andy739,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a challenging situation. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.

  1. Hard Reset:

    • Turn off the laptop.
    • Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the laptop battery (if removable).
    • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
    • Reconnect the battery and AC adapter.
    • Turn on the laptop.
  2. External Monitor:

    • Connect an external monitor to the laptop and see if you get a display on the external screen. If you do, it could indicate a problem with the laptop's built-in display.
  3. BIOS Recovery:

    • Ensure you have the correct BIOS update for your laptop model.
    • Follow the specific instructions for BIOS recovery on your laptop. This usually involves pressing a combination of keys while powering on the laptop.
    • If the BIOS update process has started, be patient and let it complete. Interrupting the process could lead to further issues.
  4. Memory and Hardware Check:

    • Reseat the RAM modules. If you have more than one, try using one at a time to see if the issue persists.
    • Ensure that all other internal components (hard drive, SSD, etc.) are properly connected.
  5. Check for Overheating:

    • Ensure that the laptop is not overheating. Overheating can cause hardware failures.
    • Clean out any dust from the vents and cooling system.
  6. Boot into Safe Mode:

    • If you can get the laptop to display anything, try booting into Safe Mode. This can help determine if the issue is related to a software or driver problem.

Remember to proceed with caution, especially when updating the BIOS, as interrupting the process or using incorrect firmware can lead to serious issues

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
