Hi @Stanford1937 ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Chromebook is not responding and the screen remains black, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue:

Force Reboot:

  • Press and hold the power button for about 10-15 seconds until the device powers off.
  • Release the power button, and then press it again to turn the Chromebook back on.

Check for Power Issues:

  • Ensure that the power adapter is properly connected to the Chromebook and the power outlet.
  • Try using a different power outlet or power adapter to eliminate potential power supply issues.

Check Battery:

  • If your Chromebook has a removable battery, make sure it is properly seated.
  • If the battery is not removable, leave the Chromebook plugged in for some time to see if it charges.

External Display:

  • Connect your Chromebook to an external monitor using the appropriate cables to check if the issue is with the internal display. If the external monitor displays content, the problem may be related to the internal display.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • If your Chromebook has a reset hole, use a paperclip or a similar tool to press the reset button. This is usually a small pinhole on the side of the Chromebook.

Recovery Mode:

  • If the screen remains black, you can try entering recovery mode:
    • Press and hold the Esc key and the Refresh key (circular arrow key).
    • While holding these keys, press the Power button.
    • Continue holding the Esc and Refresh keys until you see the recovery screen.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.-
