Tried installing linux mint 20 XFCE on my 6 years old hp with updated win 10 2004. (It came with win 8 originally). But after finishing up, and restarting the device, it just didn't load at all. Instead of bolti up in Linux, it showed "diagonsing device" and "preparing automatic repair". Please help me with this, I can't use my laptop. And I don't want to use win 10, also, I have some data in my E drive, will I be able to recover it ?
Linux distros have no concept of drive letters -- those are only used by Windows systems. If the partition is still intact, you should be able to connect the drive to a working PC using an adapter (pictured below) and copy the files and folder there from the drive.
As to the Linux boot issue, I'm sorry, but HP only warranties their PCs for usage with the OS that comes preinstalled.
IF you replace that with a Linux distro, or add a Linux distro, then you assume full responsibility for maintaining that -- including solving any problems with booting the other OS and/or installing the other OS.
Your best bet for support with issues with Linux is to contact the support forum of the distro you are using.
